This trek is quite special with only a few people trekking this region in a year. A Journey through the Kharta Valley , passing through several other verdant tiny valleys along the way which are dotted with beautiful lakes on a journey to the Khangshung face, the Eastern face of the Mt. Everest.
This isolated region borders Mt. Everest in the West, to the South lies the jagged Himalayan range of Makalu. North and East lies the arid Tibetan Plateau. The region is famous for its pristine wilderness, beautiful lakes and superb views of Mt. Makalu (8475m), Mt. Karma Changri (6289m) along with the enormous Khangsung glacier.

Day 1

Place & Transport: Chengdu to Lhasa, Flight No. TBA
Today's Activities: Airport to Hotel Transfer
Meals: /
Detailed Itinerary: Take flight from Chengdu to Lhasa. From Gongkar airport it is about 1 hour' drive to Lhasa , first along the Yarlung Tsangpo then into the Kyi Chu Valley.

Day 2

Place & Transport: Lhasa
Today's Activities: Potala Palace, Barkhor street
Meals: B,L,D
Detailed Itinerary: Today, our highlights are Potala Palace and Jokhang temple. The cardinal landmark of Lhasa, Potala Palace, is a structure of massive portions. Its towering image already appearing on various occasions, but your first sight of the Potala will still be an awe-inspiring moment. Potala Palace is a place where you can appreciate the Tibetan culture, religion and art of architecture as well.

Jokhang Temple is the spiritual center of Tibet. Every day, pilgrims from every corner of Tibet trek a long distance to the temple to pray for their now and future. The temple is the product of Han, Tibetan and Nepalese architectural techniques. Around the temple is the Barkhor Street, the oldest street in a very traditional city in Tibet. We can have a visit after the Jokhang visit. Out there, we can visit a handcraft product store.

Day 3

Place & Transport: Lhasa/Gyantse
Today's Activities: Lake Yamdrok Tso
Meals: B,L,D
Detailed Itinerary: A long, yet scenic day's drive across the Khamba La and Kora La (passes), along the shores of Lake Yamdrok Tso to Gyantse. In the afternoon we make the short (2-3 hour) drive along the valley to Shigatse.

Day 4

Place & Transport: Tashilhunpo/Xegar

Detailed Itinerary: Tashilhunpo is the seat of the Panchen Lama, second only in importance to the Dalai Lama. Its numerous halls contain a 21.6-meter wooden statue of Maitreya, the future Buddha and elaborate, jewel encrusted reliquary chorten. In the afternoon we drive to Xegar.

Day 5

Place & Transport: Xegar/Kharta

Detailed Itinerary: Drive from Xegar to Kharta. Then we will seach for packing and hiring yaks for next few days trekking. O/n in camping.

Day 6

Place & Transport: Kharta/Yueba(Trekking begins from Day 6)
Today's Activities: Trekking
Meals: B,L,D
Detailed Itinerary: Trekking: It takes about 2.5 hours from Kharta to Yueba. From Kharta, cross bridge over the Lang Chu, then follow left bank and head to westwards. O/n camping.

Day 7

Place & Transport: Yuepe/Langma La
Today's Activities: Trekking

Detailed Itinerary: Trek Yuepe to base camp of Langma La (5,100m). O/n camping. 6hrs.

Langma La Lake

Day 8

Place & Transport: Langma La/Cave
Today's Activities: Trekking
Meals: B,L,D
Detailed Itinerary: Trek about 2.5 hours from Langma La to the Cave. It is one difficult day. If weather clears, there are wonderful views of Mt. Makalu (8,463) and other high mountains. O/n camping. 5.5hrs.

Day 9

Place & Transport: Pethang
Today's Activities: Trekking

Detailed Itinerary: Cave to Pethang (4-hours). Heading down the valley from the cave to a long, narrow trail 300m form the bottom of the Karma Valley, after crossing the Karma Valley, the path leads to Karma chu to Pethang. O/n camping. 4hrs.

Day 10

Place & Transport: Pethang/Pethang Ringmo
Today's Activities: Trekking
Meals: B,L,D
Detailed Itinerary: Pethang-Pethang Ringmo, 5 hours walk, and camp at Kangshung Base Camp. O/n in camping.5 hrs

Mt.Makalu

Day 11

Place & Transport: Pethang Ringmo/Pethang
Today's Activities: Trekking
Meals: B,L,D
Detailed Itinerary: come back from Pethang Ringmo to Pethang but instead of turning left to the Langma La we will go straight ahead to the Shao La (5030m). 4.5hrs

Day 12

Place & Transport: Pethang/Sharlung
Today's Activities: Trekking
Meals: B,L,D
Detailed Itinerary: Pethang-Sharlung, 5.5hrs walk. Walk back up to a point just below the cave called Tangshum. Turn right along a ridge that overlooks the river valley, on the right, which extends to the northeast and the Chok la. Continue to the end of the ridge to its end and descend for a short distance to another cave, the Sharlung, situated next to an emerald lake within a cwn.

Day 13

Place & Transport: Sharlung/Sharo
Today's Activities: Trekking

Detailed Itinerary: Sharlung to Sharo, (5 hours). Turn north and cross two ridge to reach a wooden valley. The peaks of Makalu are directly opposite by viewing from the camp site. O/n in camping.

Day 14

Place & Transport: Sharo/Kharta
Today's Activities: Trekking

Detailed Itinerary: Sharo to Kharta in 6 hours. O/n in camping.

Kharta valley

Day 15

Place & Transport: Mt.Everest
Today's Activities: Rongbuk monastery,Mt.Everest
Meals: B,L,D
Detailed Itinerary: Drive to Rongbuk monastery (5,200m), which is the highest monastery in the world. It takes 6- hours drive to Rongbuk to view the North face of the Mt Everest (8,848 m). o/n

Day 16

Place & Transport: Lhatse

Detailed Itinerary: Drive back to Lhatse.

Day 17

  • Meals whilst trekking / camping. (Since this is the isolated region, and no restraunt during the trekking, a cook and meals provided by us is necessary.)
  • Porters or pack animals for personal gear whilst trekking. (Our guide will try to arrange yaks at Kharta. But if there is no yaks available during that period-golden season for climbing, we will try to arrange porters for carrying things for you.)

What is a Tibet Permit?

When you fly from any city to Lhasa you will need to show this permit when you check in at the airport. Furthermore, whenever you buy a flight to Lhasa you need to show this permit. TTB permits are also needed by groups traveling by Land Cruiser but this will be arranged by the travel agency organizing the trip. More »
