China to invest 310 mln yuan in Tibet wetland protection

Reporters recently learned from Tibet's Bureau of Forestry that as one of China's ecological security projects specially designed for the Tibetan Plateau, China will invest 310 million yuan to protect the wetland ecosystem in Tibet.

Affected by Himalayan orogeny and a unique highland climate, a vast, widely-scattered and unique wetland ecosystem had formed in the Tibetan Plateau. Data from Tibet's first wetland survey shows that the total area of Tibet's wetlands stands at 6 million hectares, making up 10 percent of China's total. The wetland ecosystem in Tibet consists of lakes, swamps, rivers and other constructed wetlands whose total areas stand at 2.54 million hectares, 3.2 million hectares, 264,000 hectares and 1,000 hectares respectively.

An official from the Wildlife Protection Division of Tibet's Bureau of Forestry stated that Tibet's wetland ecosystem is the largest and most complicated ecosystem in China. At present, the wetlands in Tibet are under good protection.
