I want to travel to Tibet on my own as opposed to paying for an expensive group tour.

Does anyone have experience with a Chinese travel agent that will get me one in exchange for a fee?

The only legal way you can obtain one is to book a tour with us.

However their are self-tours you can book, where you pay for the transport and one night in a hotel with a day tour. After that the rest is up to you.

However there is more than one kind of permit needed for Tibet depending on where you go.

If your just staying in Lhasa when a Tibet travel permit or TTB as its called will just do.

If you're going to Lhasa, you absolutely need a Tibet Travel Permit, which can only be arranged by an agency for you. I recommend that you use a Tibetan company instead of a Chinese one.

You don't need to book a group tour -- you can go by yourself, though it will increase costs. Unfortunately you will have to pay for a guide every day that you are in Lhasa, though he need not escort you around if you're not heading to the major monasteries.

I'd recommend that you go to Amdo or Kham instead. These traditionally Tibetan regions are located in Qinghai & Sichuan (and parts of Gansu and Yunnan). There are far fewer travel restrictions and you don't need a Tibet Travel Permit to go there!

Good luck!
